I was fortunate that he took time to meet me for coffee when I was in Copenhagen two years ago. Meeting him was special not only because he’s an incredibly experienced photojournalist and an extremely nice guy, he’s the photographer who took what may be my favorite photograph.

I can’t put it into words, but this picture does it for me. I never tire of looking at it. He sent me a scan of the negative earlier this year and I couldn’t get it printed fast enough. It’s now the only photo hanging in my living room.

Michael shot some beautiful promotional photos for a show she was in. I later found out just what an amazing photographer he is.

Michael is probably best known for his Los Toros project, a stunningly beautiful collection of 16 years worth of bullfighting images from Spain, Mexico, South America, and France.

I’ve been sad in the bullring, but also exhilarated beyond what can be found in everyday life. It makes one silent and it makes one gasp and stand and cheer and hide one’s eyes. And it is beautiful, if one cares to pay attention. Form and shape, made and gone. Partnering with that which wants you dead.

I love skill-based reality competitions.

Last week I was watching Shear Genius and thought I was dreaming when I heard Michael Grecco’s name. OMG! A chance to see him shoot on one of my favorite shows?! Sweet!

My initial reaction is that he seemed a little harsh with the stylists and and a bit cold to the models, but I’m sure there are lots of footage showing just the opposite, as Michael himself mentioned on Flickr:

I was actually asked to be meaner than I was when we started out shooting. The show was edited to be as intense as possible and make good TV. They actually edited a 45 minute shoot with each hairdresser to be as intense as possible. There were also lots of laughs and jokes on the set, but that did not make for a good show.

The reality was that none of them did really good hair for the shoot. I could have really been tough but I tried to be as specific as I could with them for the audience’s sake.

If you missed it, Bravo makes it pretty easy to catch shows in rerun.

This is an amazing collection that’s not to be missed. The size of the exhibit is very overwhelming. With almost 500 images, I was zoning out after less than half of them and plan to go back early next week to get through the rest.

As it’s September 11th, I’m reminded of the amazing photo book Aftermath: World Trade Center Archive by Joel Meyerowitz.

Joel was the only photographer given unrestricted access to ground zero after the event, giving us an intimate view that news cameras could not.

Late last year, Joel was featured on The Candid Frame, a wonderful photography podcast by Ibarionex R. Perello.
